Hillbilly on the menu? It tastes much better than you are imagining. Lumpy’s Ice cream surprised us with unique flavors and a comforting atmosphere perfect for families and relaxed experience.

Wait Ave, Wake Forest, Wake County

You won’t have to wait long on Wait Ave in Wake Forest for great Ice Cream. Lumpy’s Ice Cream is not far from the city center of Wake Forest and coincidentally Southeastern Seminary. The Surrounding area is well maintained and has a great small town vibe.

The entrance is a little odd. There are two medians and sets of barriers that made it hard to turn in without taking a slightly round-about path. All the same, it was easy enough to spot from the road.

There is parking on both sides for the building and it has enough space for about 20 cars. Not need to worry if the parking looks full. There are several public parking options in the area. One such area is just down the street from Lumpy’s on Wait Ave. If you do not mid street parking, there is some on Wait Ave too. Here is a link to the official Wake Forest Parking map if you are in a pinch.

They Make Ice Cream Not Furniture

Lumpy’s Ice Cream is not trying to win any awards for feng shui. You see this from the humble exterior with some playful elements. Just about everywhere you turn there is some custom art piece painted right onto the make-up of the building. Most of it is comical and light hearted. No one wants their ice cream to be serious.

The out door space is about as large as the indoor space. If you have big group, you can easily sprawl outside and enjoy a great NC summer day. We found a simple bench outside to soak up the last bits of good weather for the day.

I love that there is a literal ice cream cart that is clearly used by the buisness inside. So much of the items around the front counter are items of pride like so many other small buisnesses. You can see all the triumphes this shop had over the last 20 years in building this factory of smiles. I am a bit of a sucker or good old entrepenure success stories.

What’s On The Cone?

The ice cream is anything besides standard. They start with locally-sourced, hormone-free milk and fresh fruits and make novel flavors. To my surprise, they have a sign behind the counter proudly showing that they get their dairy products from our other friends at Simply Natural Creamery. Who knew?!

There is a small chalk board on the counter showing what the favorite flavors are for the employees on shift. I love recommendations for stuff like this and saw one employee loved “hillbilly”. I stopped right there and ordered it. The employee asked me if I knew it had alchohol. My heart skipped a beat as I realized I may have found my new favorite flavor on earth.

They recommended a Honey flavor too so I ordered that for Madilyn with solid success. They have several other boozy flavors that do require you to be 21+. Overall we really loved the ice cream. It has a sense of comfort food that some other ice creams just misses. It also does not leave me wanting to drink a bunch of water after I eat some unlike some other brands.

You can also find Lumpy’s Ice cream around town and even at some FC North Carolina Soccer games too. Definetly see what wacky stuff the mustache ice cream man has and give them a shot. You just might find something you like.

Hillbilly Ice Cream Is Not What You Think

Lumpy’s Ice Cream when from a quirky ice cream shop to fun local secret when we saw hillbilly was on the menu. If we see their logo on an ice cream cart rolling around town somewhere, I will be running to see what they have with them.

Overall

Fun atmosphere and ice cream true to its name. Lumpy’s Ice Cream was a real surprise for me that I look forward to returning too. I do not have too many reasons to visit Wake Forest but I guess I need to start making a few more.
