The New Bern Farmer’s Market is a local staple that offers a range of hand made and fresh goods. With so many other great attractions in the area, this is a great add-on to any day trip in the area. Bring a few bucks and see what inspires you.
I’m Guessing It’s In New Bern
Correct! The New Bern Farmer’s Market is located in downtown New Bern not far from Tryon Palace and Baker’s Kitchen Restaurant and Bakery. New Bern’s downtown area is a very picturesque colonial town. Being the original capital of NC, it is packed with history and has been well maintained through out the years.
I was very worried about parking when we visited but the town has done an excellent job of marking parking areas. At most intersections you can see a parking sign showing you which way to get to the nearest parking area. We parked at a parking area near S Front Street and Craven Street. We parked there because we paired our visit with breakfast at Baker’s Kitchen. If you want to plan it out, feel free to check out the New Bern Official parking map.
The New Bern Farmers market is right off of South Front street. Centered between the waterfront, the Tryon Palace and so much more, this makes a great stop on any walking tour in New Bern.
Lots of Market. Some Farm
The New Bern Farmer’s Market is a combination of indoor and outdoor vendor areas. Neither are on the same scale as the NC State Farmers market in Raleigh. Nonetheless, the facility is charming and aptly sized for its use.
When we came, all the vendor spaces were filled by art pieces, artisan items and hand made goods. Honey, berries and even some seedlings were for sale here. In all, the fresh produce was a little light considering it is a farmer’s market. There was a florist selling individual flowers and full bouquets. I saw “Sun flowers : 1$” and bought one out of instinct for Madilyn. It was about half her height and became her favorite accessory of the day. Best dollar I ever spent.
The mix of different items was cool to see and appeared to truly be local. I would recommend coming here if you are looking for some custom wall art. New Bern has a very proud identity with their Bear coat of arms. There were quite a few locals here selling different New Bern memorabilia. The strong pride for their history really makes this everything about this town memorable for me.
No Dogs!
One frustrating thing for me was their “No Pets” policy inside. The building is open air and has roll-up doors all along both sides. The idea that the building is particularly different from the outside seemed funny. There were a few people with dogs but they kept them outside for the most part.
The New Bern Farmer’s Market is not particularly impressive but it does not need to be. It’s proximity to the rest of downtown New Bern means it is an easy stop on your day trip, or at least a place to stretch your legs after lunch.
Overall
The New Bern Farmer’s Market offers a quaint array of locally made goods and produce. Not much to write home about but you will leave feeling satisfied. The close proximity to downtown New Bern makes is a great added part to any weekend day trip. A few more non-produce vendors than I would prefer but plenty of great finds.
